Ray was born in Portland, Oregon in 1941 to Anne and Alfred “Jack” Jackson. Jack passed away when Ray was three years old. Anne later married Ralph Halm, who adopted Ray at age eight and moved the family to Utah. Ray loved living near the mountains surrounding Provo. When he was a teenager, he attending boarding school in Seward, Nebraska, where he became known for his large record collection.
